Si les moulins \u00e0 eau sont connus depuis l\u2019antiquit\u00e9, les moulins \u00e0 vent se sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s en Occident \u00e0 partir du 12<span><sup>e<\/sup><\/span> si\u00e8cle. Situ\u00e9s sur les terres d\u2019un seigneur, les moulins en \u00e9taient sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9, il se devait de les entretenir et de les mettre \u00e0 disposition des habitants. En contrepartie, les paysans, oblig\u00e9s de les utiliser, payaient un droit de mouture. Le meunier, lui, payait un bail au seigneur.
