Sur un simple bloc de granit, deux bas-reliefs en bronze repr\u00e9sentent, l\u2019un le profil du Commandant Malbert, l\u2019autre la silhouette de l\u2019Iroise, remorqueur de haute mer \u00e0 bord duquel il s\u2019illustra, sauvant de nombreuses vies humaines.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Louis Malbert est n\u00e9 le 18 juillet 1881 \u00e0 Saint-Quay-Portrieux dans une famille d\u2019entrepreneurs du b\u00e2timent. Orphelin de p\u00e8re \u00e0 10 ans, il est \u00e9lev\u00e9 par sa m\u00e8re, sa grand-m\u00e8re et sa tante. Tr\u00e8s vite il manifeste son int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la mer, encourag\u00e9 par son tuteur Albert Gourio capitaine au long cours, \u00e9galement natif de Saint-Quay-Portrieux. Louis Malbert d\u00e9bute ainsi sa carri\u00e8re en embarquant \u00e0 13 ans en tant que mousse sur le trois-m\u00e2ts KerJoseph.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Six ans plus tard, il suit les cours d&#8217;\u00e9l\u00e8ve officier \u00e0 Paimpol o\u00f9 il obtient le brevet<span> <\/span>de<span> <\/span>capitaine<span> <\/span>au<span> <\/span>long-cours. Il navigue sept ans comme officier avant d&#8217;obtenir son premier commandement<span> <\/span>en<span> <\/span>1907,<span> <\/span>\u00e0<span> <\/span>26<span> <\/span>ans sur le <i>Pierre Loti,<\/i> trois-m\u00e2ts de 84,7 m\u00e8tres.<span> <\/span>Il commande successivement d\u2019autres grands voiliers et passe 17 fois le cap Horn.<\/p>\n<p>En f\u00e9vrier 1919, commandant du quatre-m\u00e2ts <i>Champigny<\/i>, il est d\u00e9barqu\u00e9 \u00e0 San Francisco, victime de la grippe espagnole. Sauv\u00e9 de justesse, il est d\u00e9clar\u00e9 inapte \u00e0 la navigation au long cours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De retour \u00e0 Saint-Quay-Portrieux, commence alors la seconde vie de Louis Malbert, cinq ann\u00e9es de transition avant sa rencontre avec l\u2019Iroise.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2g\u00e9 de moins de quarante ans et ne pouvant se satisfaire de son statut de pr\u00e9retrait\u00e9, Louis Malbert quitte alors sa ville natale pour Brest o\u00f9 l\u2019oncle Gourio vient d\u2019ouvrir un chantier de r\u00e9paration navale. Dans ce cadre, il participe au renflouement de plusieurs navires, dont le cargo <i>Saint-Nicolas<\/i> \u00e9chou\u00e9 \u00e0 B\u00e9nodet ou le paquebot <i>Lipari. <\/i>Simultan\u00e9ment, il continue de naviguer au cabotage ou \u00e0 la p\u00eache. En embarquant \u00e0 bord du <i>L\u00e9on Bourdelles<\/i> des Phares et Balises, il d\u00e9couvre la mer d\u2019Iroise et ses nombreux dangers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/23-Commandant_Malbert_et_equipage-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h6>Louis Malbert et son \u00e9quipage.\u00a0<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>C\u2019est alors qu\u2019il est recrut\u00e9 par l\u2019Union Fran\u00e7aise Maritime, (soci\u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e en 1922 par Henri Cangardel) pour ramener de Saint-Nazaire \u00e0 Brest un ancien brise-glaces russe transform\u00e9 en remorqueur.<\/p>\n<p>Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, le 6 d\u00e9cembre 1924 le nom de Louis Malbert est inscrit sur le r\u00f4le d\u2019\u00e9quipage de l\u2019Iroise. L\u2019homme et le bateau se sont enfin rencontr\u00e9s. Leur aventure commune s\u2019ach\u00e8vera fin septembre 1931, au terme de sept ann\u00e9es consacr\u00e9es au remorquage en haute mer, au cours desquelles forgera la l\u00e9gende d\u2019un marin et d\u2019un navire li\u00e9s par le m\u00eame destin.<\/p>\n<p>Durant cette courte p\u00e9riode l\u2019Iroise totalise 120 sorties et 63 prises de remorques ouvrant droit \u00e0 indemnit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<h1>\n<p>Le remorquage en haute mer<\/p>\n<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/24-remorquage_aghia_marina-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h6>Remorquage de l&#8217;Aghia Marina le 29 d\u00e9cembre 1929.<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>La \u00ab\u00a0haute mer\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9signe l\u2019espace maritime \u00e9loign\u00e9 de plus de 20 miles des c\u00f4tes. Les navires en difficult\u00e9 y sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement de grande taille et les sommes en jeu consid\u00e9rables, tant pour l\u2019armement du navire en difficult\u00e9 que pour les diff\u00e9rentes compagnies de remorqueurs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/25-sauvetage_helene-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Depuis que les navires en difficult\u00e9 ont acquis la possibilit\u00e9, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019installation de la TSF, de se signaler et r\u00e9clamer assistance, l\u2019intervention d\u2019un remorqueur de haute mer est devenue possible. Pour autant, si le sauvetage en mer des vies humaines est un devoir pour tout marin et ne peut qu\u2019\u00eatre gratuit, le remorquage des navires en d\u00e9tresse ne l\u2019est pas. Sur ce terrain, plusieurs soci\u00e9t\u00e9s coexistent et se font concurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Entretenir une flotte de remorqueurs, pr\u00eats \u00e0 intervenir \u00e0 tout instant et par tous les temps est n\u00e9cessairement on\u00e9reux. Il faut maintenir les machines sous pression, y compris lorsque le navire est \u00e0 quai, et disposer d\u2019un \u00e9quipage d\u2019au moins une vingtaine d\u2019hommes en alerte permanente afin d\u2019\u00eatre en mesure d\u2019appareiller le plus rapidement possible pour arriver avant la concurrence sur les lieux du naufrage. D\u00e8s lors, depuis 1910 toute intervention d\u2019un remorqueur doit donner lieu \u00e0 \u00e9tablissement d\u2019un contrat entre lui et l\u2019armateur du navire en difficult\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La r\u00e9mun\u00e9ration du remorqueur n\u2019est pourtant pas automatique. Ainsi, il est stipul\u00e9 que si le bateau ayant demand\u00e9 assistance, n\u2019est pas sauv\u00e9 ou peut se passer des services du remorqueur, tous les frais engag\u00e9s restent \u00e0 la charge de ce dernier. C\u2019est la fameuse clause du \u00ab\u00a0no cure, no pay\u00a0\u00bb. A l\u2019\u00e9poque, il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas rare qu\u2019en cours de route, une fois le danger pass\u00e9, le navire assist\u00e9 coupe discr\u00e8tement la remorque et fausse compagne \u00e0 son sauveteur. Celui-ci aura alors travaill\u00e9 pour rien.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/26-journal_de_mer_Iroise.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h6>Journal de mer de l&#8217;Iroise, Capitaine Louis Malbert<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Une fois \u00e0 terre, le principe d\u2019une caution, dont le montant est fix\u00e9 imm\u00e9diatement, est n\u00e9goci\u00e9e entre les armateurs. Si au bout de quarante-deux jours la caution n\u2019a fait l\u2019objet d\u2019aucune r\u00e9clamation, l\u2019affaire est conclue et chaque partie renonce \u00e0 l\u2019arbitrage d\u2019une tierce partie.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dans le cas contraire, le contentieux est soumis \u00e0 arbitrage et la r\u00e9mun\u00e9ration \u00e9ventuelle, fix\u00e9es en fonction du co\u00fbt du remorquage, mais \u00e9galement de la valeur de la cargaison sauv\u00e9es. L\u2019arbitre se prononce au vu des rapports de mer \u00e9tablis par chacun des capitaines \u00ab\u00a0<i>de fa\u00e7on sinc\u00e8re et honn\u00eate<\/i>\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Dans ces ann\u00e9es-l\u00e0, l\u2019image du sauveteur en haute mer s\u2019apparente \u00e0 celle d\u2019un v\u00e9ritables \u00ab\u00a0chasseurs de prime\u00a0\u00bb. L\u2019un des m\u00e9rites de Louis Malbert a \u00e9t\u00e9 de modifier cette image, privil\u00e9giant le sauvetage des hommes embarqu\u00e9s \u00e0 celui de la cargaison. \u00ab\u00a0<i>3000 vies au bout d\u2019un c\u00e2ble\u00a0\u00bb, <\/i>comme l\u2019a \u00e9crit l\u2019\u00e9crivain Roger Vercel. Effectivement, bien des marins auraient p\u00e9ri si l\u2019Iroise n\u2019avait plong\u00e9 son \u00e9trave dans cette mer furieuse dont il portait le nom&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>En 1933 l\u2019Iroise accomplit ses derni\u00e8res sorties avant d\u2019\u00eatre vendu. Le navire sera d\u00e9finitivement d\u00e9mantel\u00e9 en 1951.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/27-Iroise_a_quai-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h6>L&#8217;Iroise \u00e0 quai.<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Rentier de 52 ans, Louis Malbert ne reste pas longtemps inactif. Il rejoint La Rochelle o\u00f9 il dirige un chantier de r\u00e9parations et de sauvetages. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019il mourra, le 28 janvier 1949.<\/p>\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, les r\u00e8gles du remorquage ont bien chang\u00e9. Depuis le naufrage de L\u2019Amoco-Cadix (1978) et ses cons\u00e9quences sur l\u2019environnement, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019affr\u00e9ter de fa\u00e7on permanente des Remorqueurs d\u2019Intervention d\u2019Assistance et de Sauvetage (RIAS) r\u00e9partis entre trois stations (Brest, Cherbourg et Toulon). L\u2019\u00c9tat s\u2019appuie alors sur l\u2019exp\u00e9rience de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Abeilles et ses nouveaux remorqueurs tr\u00e8s puissants Ce dispositif permet au pr\u00e9fet maritime de faire intervenir un remorqueur s\u2019il consid\u00e8re qu\u2019un navire repr\u00e9sente un danger pour son \u00e9quipage ou la pr\u00e9servation du littoral\u00a0; et ceci m\u00eame contre la volont\u00e9 de son armateur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Depuis 2005 c\u2019est l\u2019Abeille Bourbon qui est amarr\u00e9e quai Malbert \u00e0 Brest. Affr\u00e9t\u00e9 par la Marine Nationale, 365 jours par an, elle doit \u00eatre pr\u00eate \u00e0 appareiller en 40 minutes et cela 24h sur 24. D\u00e8s que les vents atteignent 50 kms\/h, l\u2019Abeille est en alerte m\u00e9t\u00e9o et quitte son quai \u00e0 Brest pour gagner Ouessant. Sauv\\u00e9 de justesse, il est d\\u00e9clar\\u00e9 inapte \\u00e0 la navigation au long cours.<span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\\u00a0<\\\/span><\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>De retour \\u00e0 Saint-Quay-Portrieux, commence alors la seconde vie de Louis Malbert, cinq ann\\u00e9es de transition avant sa rencontre avec l\\u2019Iroise.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>\\u00c2g\\u00e9 de moins de quarante ans et ne pouvant se satisfaire de son statut de pr\\u00e9retrait\\u00e9, Louis Malbert quitte alors sa ville natale pour Brest o\\u00f9 l\\u2019oncle Gourio vient d\\u2019ouvrir un chantier de r\\u00e9paration navale. Dans ce cadre, il participe au renflouement de plusieurs navires, dont le cargo <i>Saint-Nicolas<\\\/i> \\u00e9chou\\u00e9 \\u00e0 B\\u00e9nodet ou le paquebot <i>Lipari. <\\\/i>Simultan\\u00e9ment, il continue de naviguer au cabotage ou \\u00e0 la p\\u00eache. En embarquant \\u00e0 bord du <i>L\\u00e9on Bourdelles<\\\/i> des Phares et Balises, il d\\u00e9couvre la mer d\\u2019Iroise et ses nombreux dangers.<\\\/p>\",\"content_en_gb\":\"\n\n<p>Six years later, he attended officer cadet courses in Paimpol, where he was awarded a Master Mariner's certificate. He sailed for seven years as an officer before obtaining his first command in 1907, at the age of 26, on the Pierre Loti, an 84.7-meter three-master. He went on to command other tall ships, rounding Cape Horn 17 times.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>In February 1919, commanding the four-masted schooner Champigny, he was landed in San Francisco by the Spanish flu. Although barely saved, he was declared unfit for long-distance sailing.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Back in Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Louis Malbert's second life began, five years of transition before his encounter with the Iroise.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Less than forty years old and unable to be satisfied with his early-retirement status, Louis Malbert left his hometown for Brest, where his uncle Gourio had just opened a ship-repair yard. Here, he took part in the refloating of several ships, including the cargo ship Saint-Nicolas, grounded at B\\u00e9nodet, and the liner Lipari. At the same time, he continued to sail coastal and fishing vessels. L\\u2019homme et le bateau se sont enfin rencontr\\u00e9s. Pour autant, si le sauvetage en mer des vies humaines est un devoir pour tout marin et ne peut qu\\u2019\\u00eatre gratuit, le remorquage des navires en d\\u00e9tresse ne l\\u2019est pas. Sur ce terrain, plusieurs soci\\u00e9t\\u00e9s coexistent et se font concurrence.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Entretenir une flotte de remorqueurs, pr\\u00eats \\u00e0 intervenir \\u00e0 tout instant et par tous les temps est n\\u00e9cessairement on\\u00e9reux. Il faut maintenir les machines sous pression, y compris lorsque le navire est \\u00e0 quai, et disposer d\\u2019un \\u00e9quipage d\\u2019au moins une vingtaine d\\u2019hommes en alerte permanente afin d\\u2019\\u00eatre en mesure d\\u2019appareiller le plus rapidement possible pour arriver avant la concurrence sur les lieux du naufrage. D\\u00e8s lors, depuis 1910 toute intervention d\\u2019un remorqueur doit donner lieu \\u00e0 \\u00e9tablissement d\\u2019un contrat entre lui et l\\u2019armateur du navire en difficult\\u00e9.\\u00a0<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>La r\\u00e9mun\\u00e9ration du remorqueur n\\u2019est pourtant pas automatique. Ainsi, il est stipul\\u00e9 que si le bateau ayant demand\\u00e9 assistance, n\\u2019est pas sauv\\u00e9 ou peut se passer des services du remorqueur, tous les frais engag\\u00e9s restent \\u00e0 la charge de ce dernier. C\\u2019est la fameuse clause du \\u00ab\\u00a0no cure, no pay\\u00a0\\u00bb. A l\\u2019\\u00e9poque, il n\\u2019\\u00e9tait pas rare qu\\u2019en cours de route, une fois le danger pass\\u00e9, le navire assist\\u00e9 coupe discr\\u00e8tement la remorque et fausse compagne \\u00e0 son sauveteur. L\\u2019un des m\\u00e9rites de Louis Malbert a \\u00e9t\\u00e9 de modifier cette image, privil\\u00e9giant le sauvetage des hommes embarqu\\u00e9s \\u00e0 celui de la cargaison. \\u00ab\\u00a0<i>3000 vies au bout d\\u2019un c\\u00e2ble\\u00a0\\u00bb, <\\\/i>comme l\\u2019a \\u00e9crit l\\u2019\\u00e9crivain Roger Vercel.
